Coenzyme Q-10 or "CoQ-10" is a fat-soluble quinone that is structurally similar to Vitamin K and Vitamin E and commonly known as Ubiquinone. Coenzyme Q-10 is a natural nutrient fond in relatively high concentrations in the liver, kidney, pancreas and especially the heart. Found in most living organisms, it is essential to the production of cellular energy and can be both synthesised in the body from cholesterol and derived from dietary sources. After consumption of food, energy that is released during the oxidation of fatty acids, amino acids and carbohydrates is made available within the mitochondria, CoQ-10 is important because it lies within the membrane of a cell organelle called the mitochondria. Mitochondria are affectionately known as the "power house" of the cell because of their ability to produce cellular energy, or ATP, by shuttling protons derived from nutrient breakdown through the process of aerobic (oxygen) metabolism. Coenzyme Q-10 is a highly mobile hydrophobic carrier that is reduced by electrons from NADH, which are produced during the oxidation of food sources from the Krebs cycle (citric acid cycle). This reduced Co Q-10 transfer its energy to the cytochrome deluge of the ETC producing ATP (aerobic energy).
Coenzyme Q-10 also has a role in the body as an antioxidant.
